In Romans 12:1-5 God speaks through the words of the Apostle Paul:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.
Notice something? God calls for us to be united – not thinking more of ourselves than we think of each other, but working toward unification in the love of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. Is that our goal…..or do we resist that humble unity?
A prayer from the Corrymeela Community:
God, we believe that You have called us together to broaden our experience of You and of each other. We believe that we have been called to help in healing the many wounds of society and in reconciling people to each other and to You Help us, as individuals and together, to work in love, for peace and never lose heart. we commit oursleves to each other – in joy and sorrow. We commit ourselves to all who share in the work of reconciliation – to support and stand by them. We commit ourselves to You – as our Guide and Friend.
