IN THE STILLNESS

Matthew 14:22-34 A crazy prayer conversation comes to mind as I consider this week’s blog – the conversation between Jesus and Peter that night on the Sea of Galilee in the midst of a storm. Peter sees Jesus walking on water and is scared to death! “If it is You, Jesus, tell me to come out onto the water!

Be careful what you pray for, Peter, because Jesus called him to come out! Peter wasn’t ready for this and shortly began to sank and had to pray that the Lord would save him! It would take a while, some more changes would have to occur in Peter before he was ready to go wherever the risen Christ would send him – even though the man’s earthly life would end in death upside down on a cross, he was indeed saved for all eternity, and in part because of Peter’s great witness, the world itself would have the opportunity to hear of Christ and cry out for salvation themselves!

The Wesleyan Covenant Prayer seems particularly appropriate this week:

I am no longer my own, but Yours.
Put me to what You will, place me with whom You will.
Put me to doing, put me to suffering.
Let me be put to work for You or set aside for You,
Praised for You or criticized for You.
Let me be full, let me be empty.
Let me have all things, let me have nothing.
I freely and fully surrender all things to Your glory and service.
And now, O wonderful and holy God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, 
You are mine, and I am Yours.
So be it.
And the covenant which I have made on earth,
Let it also be made in heaven.  Amen.
