A favorite scripture of mine which typically appears in the lectionary on Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in the Christian year, is from Matthew 25:31-46. In this passage, Christ speaks of His return to judge the nations. The bottom line, you can call Him Lord all you want, but if you don’t obey his commandments regarding those in need and those who are marginalized, in Christ’s words: “I never knew you!” Lord is not a word we say – He is a Lord we obey. God is not a God we use, God is the God Who seeks to use us for the good of the whole world.
Prayer: Eternal God, forgive my presumption in using you for my own advantage – when I want to appear holy, powerful, and worthy of praise. Forgive me for wanting to use You rather than be used by You for the betterment of others . As I begin again as Your forgiven child, let me live in such a way that all that I do brings praise to You alone. In the name of Your Son, I pray, AMEN>

I read a prayer by Thomas a Kempis from his work, The Imitation of Christ, this week during my devotions; it gives me hope, as each new day comes, that things can be different – I can be different – we all can be one – if we will live into God’s mission as shaped by God’s love. I have shared it with some friends and thought it would be something I might also share with you.
Prayer: Help me, Lord God, to fulfill my good intention and Your holy service. Starting today, let me begin perfectly, for what I have done so far is nothing. AMEN.
