To love sacrificially is to love without thought of whether love will be returned or not. Think of our Lord – His life of love, His sacrifice of pouring out His life for us to prove His love for us. Never knowing if we would accept His love or acknowledge the sacrifice. Never knowing but loving us anyway and giving us the option to receive His love, be humbled by His sacrifice and be transformed into instruments of His love. We love because Christ first loved us (1 John 4:19). As it says in the Eucharistic liturgy: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us! That proves God’s love for us!
Lord, make me a vessel of Your love not so that others will love me, but so that they might love You because Your love has flowed through me. In Christ’s name, AMEN.
